recently made known HAVEN, CT -- Jock Reynolds, the Henry J Heinz II director of the Yale University Art Gallery, announces the acquisition of "The Master Sets" a total of 1465 gelatin silver prints by dint of the influential American landscape photographer, Robert Adams. The 15 vintage fixs will join the already acquired put "What We Bought: The novel World, Scenes from the Denver Metropolitan Area," making Yale the chosen repository of the artist's full body of work. Along with the acquisition is an agreement with Adams for the gallery to receive the same print, or set of prints, of all his coming work.

"The significance of this extraordinary addition to our already potent collection of post 1950 American photography cannot be overstated," says Reynolds. "This acquisition forms a worthy completeness to the extensive holdings of 19th-century Western American landscape photography residing at Yale's Beincke Rare part and Manuscript Library. 'The Master Sets' will provide an invaluable visual resource for pupils artists and scholars."

Returning to Colorado in 1962 after earning his PhD from the University of Southern California, Adams was assaulted and dismayed by the rapid transformation of the landscape in the Denver region. He then began photographing what had become banal suburbia, perfect with tract housing, strip malls and gas stations. Adams said, "In a small in number years, the area's ruin would be a testament to a bargain we had tried to strike. The pictures record what we purchased, what we paid and what we could not pervert with money [i]or[/i] gain They document a separation from ourselves and in divert from the natural world that we allegeed to love."



Adams has received several awards quite through his career, including two Guggenheim Fellowships in 1973 and 1980; brace National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships in 1973 and 1978; the Colorado Governor's Award in the Arts in 1979; a MacArthur Foundation Award in 1994; and the image International Prize for Photography in 1995
